As we have all been told before when it comes from the legends and tales of brave warriors saving the princess from evil in the Kingdoms, have been told throughout the generations in different ways… but this time, it’s told in a quite interesting way. In this vast Kingdom you live in, is a princess of the land who has been stolen from the castle and held against her will from the powerful and literally evil Queen *at least this time it’s an evil queen, am I right?*. With the princess in her possession she absorbs the power she has combined with the data of the kingdom and turns the entire kingdoms populace into single bit forms*sounding pretty grim already*. Is there anyone or anything that can stop the Evil Queen and save the princess…? Then somewhere in the kingdom a small bit pixel by the name of Pip rises from the wake of everything and decides to be our shinning beacon of hope to bring salvation to his kingdom. Come on, you are on the edge of your seat with anticipation *I can tell these things*. This is just the intro of this excellent game.
Although, a fearless hero has risen to go on this perilous journey, there is still one thing to remember…. he is a freaking single bit cube facing great obstacles and terrifying monsters *what can be done?*! Do not turn away in defeat just yet, the saying, “when there is a will there is a way” comes to play. Our little friend Pip has a way of overcoming this by changing his pixels from single, to 8, to even 32 bits. The way this is accomplished is by defeating a certain enemy you will encounter and use a lot. They are specialized blue minions called “bit-stream enemies” (they do return after a certain amount of time after killing them, this is important to remember). After defeating it once will have you evolve to 8 bit, and beat it once more to evolve to 32 bit. However, you will meet challenges forcing you to devolve back to your smaller bits in order to make your way through the game. A fantastic concept to be able to evolve to meet the needs of the challenge you will face in this plat former. By using a different way to think is something I found rather intriguing and entertaining.
One of the other excellent parts to this game is that there is no tutorial! You jump right in, make mistakes, and learn how to not make the same mistakes *must admit, I made the same mistake more than once*. Being able to figure out how everything works was an advantage because it kept you on your toes.
Moreover, the game overall is straight forward, you embark on your quest and will encounter various enemies to defeat, overcome puzzling challenges to halt your progress, search for three townsfolk to rescue from danger (in each level), and are blessed with save points to aid you. You know, the norm of plat forming games always give you *me joke much, na*. What is good to know is that there are healing factors in the game, and each give different levels of health back. An apple heals one heart *heart system is a lot like zeldas’* and a turkey rejuvenates a lot of your hearts.
It’s essential to know what each evolution does because you will be devolving just as much as evolving. Each bit has different things you do, provided below are each bits different abilities through each evolution/devolution (Knowing the differences to the process helps with the puzzles aspect of the game).
In the end, this gem of bringing and combining the two genres of RPG elements with major plat forming creates a new style of playing. This gave me such fulfillment of the game, I was taken away and surprised due to the amount of fun you can have with just how simple the overall idea is. Keeping this game simple was the overall selling point to me, giving it a high replay value. They ensured the games presence looks great, combined with soothing pleasant music, and a storyline that is refreshed by using a queen to kidnap the princess. Adventures of Pip is wonderful game that brought back the memories of the old school plat forming that I grew up with and enjoy to play even to this day. I definitely recommend in saying to give this game a try, you won’t regret your time!
